Necessity/Indulgence/Dependency
As I began to nit-pick my daily life, I’ve come to a realization that there are things that are a need, and things that are a need, because I make them so. To narrow my project down to 3, I chose liquids.
When found my new discovery, I referred back to my past experiences.
First off is the Starbucks coffee. After breakfast, I must have my morning coffee at the nearest Starbucks. It began as an indulgence. Instead of regular home brewed coffee, I’d treat myself to a venti 2 pump classic ice coffee with Breve. Fancy cup of coffee makes you feel fancier then you think. It was occasional visits, which naturally became a daily routine. As I became a full time student, Starbucks became my drug of choice before class. As many as 4 times a day, clearly, this was no longer a matter of simple indulgence. I saw a red flag when my bank statement solely consists of purchases at Starbucks USA. Is it the coffee that is addictive, or is it Starbucks that is addictive? Either or, I’ve realized I need to move down a notch. I feel like I’ve been down this road before.
Second, toiletries have revolutionized. After discovering Ekerds drug store in 5th grade, a new world came to my bathroom, and unfortunately the garbage. I feel excited that there are so many choices now then ever before. Bar soap was a multi-tasker. To my childhood memories, bar soap was used to wash clothes and you. (Ouch!) But now, there are invigorating micro scrubbers, anti-bacterial sanitizers with moisturizer. Isn’t it amazing? So as consumers, we buy and try all sorts of new products, and arrange them in the bathroom counter, like me. Soap and lotion has advanced to moisturizers with sunscreen, and cleansers with moisture keeping secret ingredient, and lip moisturizer for night. I guess everyone wants to clean without feeling dry? Or stop from aging. I have passed my indulging phase and moved on to more economical phase, buy and use only what you really need. But still its one too many products.
Lastly, quench my thirst and more. I believe that this is a deeper interpretation of my personality, highly addictive. 10 years ago, the source of my energy was soda, particularly Coca Cola. 7 years ago, I was introduced to alcohol, and now, I’ve matured to a healthier choice, water. Water is necessary for life, yet I’ve indulged and depended on alcohol to live my life. I remember drinking with friends, forcing myself to drink and pretend to like the taste, so I can get to that place where nothing mattered. As time and friends passed by I was only left go to that place where nothing mattered. Fortunately frequent visits to that place only got lonely and boring, not to mention expensive. So I stopped going. Thank God for that. Having the power to decipher between need and want, is a step to take control and have balance.
